This lovely picture might to be a gentle response to the dramatic national coverage given to the rescue of the hospital ship Rohilla
off Whitby in 1914.




The coming of the railway brought a flood of high society folk to Whitby and it became a very fashionable town. The walk up the 199 steps to the Abbey was the place to be seen, much to the bemusement of local people.
